WFRP Update 14

Fresh from their victory over the dwarf terrorizing undead, the heroes continue their journey up the river Reik, towards the free city of Kemperbad. The journey takes many boring days. The only entertainment being when Magdelaine attempts to tell tales of her exploits in the many riverside inns. Tales of the High-hatted-heroic wizard start to spread throughout the empire, although few believe that such tales are based in reality.

Upon arriving in Kemperbad a truly awesome sight greets the heroes. Kemperbad itself sits atop the cliff side of the river, which towers a good 500 feet above the river itself. A series of lifts and pulls sprout from the cliff side, continuously in motion, lifting people and goods into the city proper. The heroes make use of these lifts and once in the city manage to find a buyer for their goods. Not wanting to buy goods unseen, the buyer demands that he see the goods himself. Rudolpho and Elpham accompany him on the journey down to the boat. Magdelaine and Max decide to wait at the cliff top for the negotiations to finish. Magdelaine, possessed of some desire to join the negotiations, leaps off of the cliff. Max attempts to grab her, but is too slow and can only watch in amazement as she utters some strange incantation and gently floats down to the boat. When she finally returns from the river she is rewarded for her actions with a hard slap and a demand for new underwear from Max.

As the heroes continue to negotiate with various traders over the days, they eventually secure a load of brandy and wine. Aside from Magdelaine's attempts at suicide there are only two notable moments that mark their stay. Firstly a noble arrives in the free city amoung much fanfare and with many guards. Considering how their are few nobles in the free city this event causes much muttering, although the noble is lifted into the sky before much can be done. The other event hastened the heroes exit from the city. As they are loading the cargo, Rudolpho is bumped by a fellow sailor. With a quick check to see if his purse is still intact, the sailor is ushered away. It is only sometime afterwards that the others notice that someone has taken a lock of Rudolpho's hair. Once Magdelaine confirms that some evil spells require a piece of hair or flesh from the person, the heroes immediately set sail. They are not sure if distance will lessen any evil spell effects, but they are willing to try.

As they continue to sail up the Reik, they are reminded of the rumors that they had heard. Bodies of mutants floating down stream and that how even the witch hunters avoid the castle of Wittgenstein. As the heroes pass by castle Wittgenstein they quickly understand why it is avoided. One the docks is a woman, crying for help. She is ill looking and unkempt and begs the heroes to save her child. As she thrust the bundle that she is carrying forward, everyone's stomach turns over. Her so-called child is a hideous monster. The creature is covered with green hair and has eight legs. It's face has been so changed that it more resembles a spider than a child. While Magdelaine retches over the side, the rest of the heroes force the creatures from the boat and sail away from the cursed place. As they clear the docks they see a two headed sheep being chased through town by a crowd of angry townsfolk. Happy to have gotten away without being tainted by chaos they sail on. As the days while away, the town of Grissenwald get closer. Eventually they arrive at the town and asses their situation. They are able to sell the brandy for a small profit and are able to get another cabin added to the boat. During this time Magdelaine reminds them of why they have come this way. A letter that was found in the possession of the cultists in Boggenhauffen points to another cultist living in the area. Her wizardly master has quested her to put this aspiring witch on the path of righteousness.

The heroes quickly learn that a lady from Nulm had purchased the dwarven mine that is south of town some time back. With nothing to do most of the dwarfs moved on, but a few stayed, spending all their money on drink. It seemed that these few had run out of money and then they suddenly had more. Suspiciously, this was the same time that some of the outlying homes had been attacked and burned to the ground with no survivors. The townsfolk regarded the dwarfs as murders who had not yet been caught. Two of these scum decided to test the fortitude of Rudolpho and goaded him into a fight. With Elpham swinging his fists along side and Magdelaine providing some encouraging words, they quickly made short work of the surly dwarfs. Max simply watched the exchange, made a few quick bets and pocketed a bit of change as the dwarfs hit the ground.

Realizing that some evil is spreading through the land, the heroes make plans to head across land and deliver the master wizards message to the aspiring witch.
