WFRP Update 1

The coach slowly pulled out of the inn. The Sky threated to open up and pour forth it's contents on the sleepy travelers. The coachmen continued to nurse their heads, the previous night's alcohol still sloshing through their veins. It is not long before Max takes over driving and the coach fairly flies down the road. As the coach approaches a turn in the road, a single figure is seen hunched over something in the road. Within seconds forms take shape; It is Rolf Hurtsis, an old smuggling companion of Max's. He is now a horrible sight, his skin hangs in shreds and blood drips from his gaping mouth. As he stands, he drops the hand of the corpse that he was gnawing on and rushes to wards the coach. The very sight of the mutated ex-smuggler causes the horses to rear in panic and struggle to escape. The harness, it's best days behind it, can no longer bear the burden and snaps, allowing the horses to rush headlong into the forest, dragging Max after them.

Chaos and confusion reigns on the coach. Hurtz works the brake feverishly, attempting to avert a crash and avoid the flashing dagger wielded by the mad mutant. Rolf clambers over the coach attempting to slay everyone, but is quickly cut down by the combined efforts of the heroes. As they gaze down the trail, they can see a snake faced man, slaying the horses of another coach and a rat faced being rushing down the trail towards them. Max, Rudolpho and Elpham all rush into battle with the creatures of chaos. Rudolpho is wounded and Magdelaine rushes to his aid, while Max and Elpham make short work of the mutants and then rush towards the over turned coach, where another mutant, wielding a crossbow and a large claw stands. Once again, the purity of the heroes overcomes the taint of the chaos and the evil is put down.

But it is not all happiness, for none of the inhabitants of the coach had survived. The family of artisans is dead, as well as the labouror and the priest of Sigmar. A sixth body is found in the woods, which appears to be Rudolpho himself (dan-dan-dum!!). As the coachmen retrieve the horses, Max accumulates a small fortune by searching the bodies of the mutants and discovers a number of papers on Rudolphos doppelganger. The papers claim that the bearer will be recognized as the Baron of Leibshine. The findings are quickly hidden as a patrol of road wardens appear. The bodies are disposed of and the heroes are on their way again.

As night drops, the coach arrives at an inn and much discussion is had. The princess claims that she will never again travel with such buffoons and thus clears the way for the heroes to ride within the coach. It is decided that the heroes will travel to Altdorf to see if the prince's job is as good as it sounds and a decision about the Barony will be made later. The rest of the trip is boring and uneventful and eventually the heroes arrive in Altdorf.

The heroes had barely set foot off of the coach before they noticed someone watching them. Two men were gazing intently at the heroes and making a strange gesture that they do not recognize. The men seem to spot someone else and disappear into a building. Wishing to find out more about their employment, the heroes head off to find the residence of the prince. It is easily found, but alas, the prince had left 2 days ago. It seems now that the choice has been made; the heroes will travel to Bogahyme to find out more about the possible Barony.

Chance smiled on the travelers as they encountered Josef Quartjin, and old friend of Max. Josef now plys his trade on a river boat and happens to be heading towards Bogahyme. A few drinks later, the heroes are now part of the crew, paid positions and all. As everyone is celebrating their good fortune in a riverside inn, a pair of foppish nobles and their 4 goons enter. A suspicious man who had earlier arrived joins them and they begin to harass and taunt the heroes. When Rudolpho stands and tries to reclaim their honor, the suspicious man drops him to the ground with a single punch. Elpham attempts to help his friend, but is knocked to the ground with 2 blows. The nobles lose interest and leave, allowing the heroes to head towards Josof's boat. As they travel the streets, they notice that they are being followed. Max hides and awaits their stalkers. He watches as the two men with the strange gesture come walking along the alley and are quickly and quietly shot with crossbows. max slides along the alley and manages to stabilize one of the men, but is too weak to move him. Max rushes back to the boat and enlists the aid of Magdelaine. But,as they arrive back in the alley, he finds that the bodies have had their throats slit and the crossbow bolts have been removed. It seems that the heroes are being watched and the watchers have a watcher as well.
